Mud pies

The best things in life are free ...
The topic of children enjoying mud reminded me of a painter I like, Lee So-Ji, who paints scenes of traditional Korean country life including children catching grasshoppers, or just looking at frogs.  So I borrowed a little bit from his palette and style for these two.  He loves to add a splash of red.  Author/illustrator Melissa Sweet also says ... "If a painting isn't working - add a little more red!"

Little GREEN Hen - sruble

The prompt for the CBIG blog this month is green, and the prompt for Illustration Friday this week is detective. I thought that any literary detective worth his salt would wonder where green eggs came from, and if he used his sleuthing skills, he’d come up with the answer.

Green eggs come from green chickens. It’s the only thing that makes sense.

The chicken that lays green eggs.

The chicken that lays green eggs.

The next question the detective should answer, is which came first, the green chicken, or the green eggs? (I think the green chicken came first. What do you think?)

p.s. The prompt for WaWe this week was The Little Red Hen. Hmm, I’m thinking that history got it wrong. It was really The Little GREEN Hen!

Please visit sruble.com to learn more about my art and projects, or my blog to see more recent art.

Little Red Hen

Little Red Hen

I wasn't familiar with the story either but had fun doing it.

The Little Red Hen

The Little Red Chook - a disturbing tale

Hello everyone,
I didn't know the story of the little red hen (or chook, as we would call her in Oz), so I looked it up on Wikipedia.  I learnt that it was probably originally a Russian folktale, which was made into a Little Golden Book (did you have those when you were growing up?  I had a few - my favourite was The Kitten Who Thought He Was A Mouse).  The story is of a hardworking hen who sows wheat, harvests it, takes it to the mill, grinds it into flour, and makes bread ... while the do-nothing duck, dog and cat refuse to help until the bread is ready to eat.
I know the LRH is the heroine of this tale, but frankly, I was so much more attracted to the duck, the dog and the cat.  I suspect most children would be, too.
I also made the disturbing discovery that the Little Red Hen is the same shape as Tasmania, the island state of Australia, where I live:

How to be a chicken!?

If I am not mistaken, then the challenge is about a children's fable?
If I'm right you should look this illustrator and author up Max Velthuijs (you may already have heard of him?). He is very popular in Belgium and Holland, the children really love his books! I read his books regularly in my class. He has also illustrated this story.
Spring vacation is over so I am back at school, and I have currently very little time to paint. So this is an illustration of a book that I've made last year. She is not red, she can’t do anything right, I think she doesn’t really know how the be a chicken!? But she is the number one in chasing away foxes!

fox and mouse

Just having fun drawing.

Foxes

one hen, two perspectives

Have you ever just felt like you just don't fit in???
I would say I have been different the whole of my little life.
Question is why do we feel the need to fit in anyway???
At 46 year old, I feel the need to be honest and true
to myself. I feel that as illustrators and artist, before we ask
other people's opinions of our work, we need to have our
own opinion. Trying to please everyone and trying to fit in their box
makes me tried and zaps me of all my creative energy.
Sometimes being the strange birdy is what takes you to the next level.
I'm just saying...
Have a wonderful week everyone!!

Baby animals

Here's mine ... I like the way young animals sleep in a heap.

Young animal transport!

This was a quick but fun painting to work on! I've only looked for some inspiration of beagle pups howling! I'm very pleased with the result!

Question for you illustrators

Hello possums, I'm looking for a little advice & thought you would be the ones to ask.  I keep searching for practical instruction & info on illustrating for children, but there's hardly anything where I live.  So I looked for online courses in children's book illustration - there's a diploma at the London Art College that looks okay (it's not an academic credit as in University, but I am more after something practical, anyway).  Have any of you tried online illustration courses, or had experience of them (good or bad)?

Spring

Hi, this is my first post for WaWe. I'm a day late for this one. I love spring! I wish it lasted longer here in Georgia, it get's hot quick here.
