Artist's Choice

Update: 12/26/10 Added cow and sheep for variety of shape and textures.

This week's assignment is the perfect opportunity to get some critiques on this landscape. Do you see any "awkward" parts? Is there a better way to arrange these hills? Your input will be very much appreciated. Thanks. *****http://carlaspicturebookadventure.blogspot.com/

hi Carla, it has a strong diagonal from top left to bottom right, which is a nice device and invites the viewer to turn the page. I like the posts coming over the hill, giving it a 3D look. I think it is balanced and my only worry is that the owl could get a bit squished onto the edge after cropping. Have you tried looking at the mirror image? this always works to show any imbalances that you can't see at first.

Thanks, Gay.

Especially for the advice about mirroring the image. And, yes, you are certainly right about the owl getting squished...thanks, again, for being my second pair of eyes.

I think adding all the animals to one side has thrown the balance off. Also, all the animals are basically the same size. Get some variety in there to help with the depth of the image. Right now you have a huge empty spot in the upper right area. Are you planning to put text in there?

Thanks, Lyon. I really appreciate your critique.

Yes, I planned on putting text there. The sky will contrast the hills but will not be emphasized; it will be a very pale blue with clouds (paper showing through).

I guess I could make the sheep smaller (or the cow larger).

I really like the composition and variety. I agree though that the right side needs something more. Perhaps the distant trees could be a bit bigger? Good luck!

Sophie,

I will play around with the size of the trees. I suppose enlarging the trees a bit would not disturb the composition because I will be using the values of colors to help maintain depth.

Thanks for the critique.
