Character Studies

I knew I wasn't ready for book illustrations just yet, but I didn't realise how far I need to improve until I tried these character studies.
I rarely draw people, let alone children, so I knew that would be difficult, but even sustaining a sense of character in five pictures of one mouse (an animal I draw all the time) was a real challenge. What a useful prompt: lots of practice needed, but what fun!

I LOVE your mouse standing on its head. You do so well with mice and I didn't feel at all like you were having trouble with him. Your girl is also off to a nice beginning! Good luck.

Very nice Bella--the mouse is my favorite but that's because I adore any animal! Looks to me like you've got it going & headed in the right direction!

The standing on the head really got me in the heart!!! I love this character. Like something out of a vintage children's book. Very nice start. You and I are complete opposites. I draw and illustrate animals, but it always a struggle for me. I'm a people watcher and studier so it's not much of a hard thing for me to do. I felt it was really important for me to learn to do animals and do it quick, but it takes time. I just keep trying to I get what I want. Just keep pressing on and watch what happens. I love it all!

You are definitely getting there. Adorable mouse. And the shapes are pretty consistent in the girl (the middle one needs more back of her head.) But what I noticed, especially on the girl is there is very little expression in the eyes. For a great tutorial on facial expression get a hold of Scott McCloud's MAKING COMICS. (I will make a post on the blog with a link.)

I'm like you, Bella, in that I rarely draw people. I have recently started trying to work more drawing children, but it does not come easy.

I think you did achieve consistency with your mouse illustrations, they are delightful!
