What I'm working on . . .

Three lovely ladies at the window . . . I'm planning to make them into a set of magnets when they're done. I always find it fascinating to see other artists' concept sketches and work-in-progress photos, so I hope you'll enjoy seeing a little of my process.

at the moment...

Currently illustrating Livi & Grace's story and nearing completion on my own book, Liam's Adventures!

For Japan

I almost can't quite come to terms with what is happening in Japan.

This is a piece I did to donate to Illustrators Australia's auction with 100% of money going to Japan. (the kanji characters in the right hand corner say 'for Japan'. I hope I got that right!) The auction is currently being set up, so stay tuned for more details as they come to hand.

Other ways to help out:
comment at Karen Andrews' blog to up her donation

It feels good to at least be doing something.

Power Tools

Watercolour on 300gsm Bockingford Rough

As watercolour artists, we know that good tools can make the job a lot easier. Brushes that have a bad case of mange and moult all over your work are one of my pet hates. Paper too, can provide battles you never envisaged. It wasn't until I did a stint in an art supply super store did I realise just how nasty the "cheap" stuff can be. All the short cuts they take to make products "look" like the quality items, only to get them home and they are major disappoinments. Usually after hours of time and effort have been lost to them.

So I made the decision that I will save a little longer and only buy the proven tools of my trade. Making a living from illustration and art is already hard enough!

So even though top rate tools won't paint a picture by themselves, they will make the job so much easier, and a lot more fun!

Presently working on!

Hello everyone ! i'm presently working on an illustration for chronicles of Narnia for my personal collection , this is the second time i redo it , first time when i finalized it , looked at it for a couple of days and decided i could improve it more by studying my subject first within my illustration. So here is the line work i finished yesterday , took me awhile to finish with detail and all but its a working progress , in the following days i will be moving on to the final stage of inking and watercolour, can't wait to start !!!:) If you got any feedback, feel free to post it :) , i'd love feedback from a different artistic eye.

My Easter book!

Hello All! I'm new here. My name is Julie Hammond. Here is my Easter book that just came out! I'm really excited for some local book events and just to see what the future holds! So that's what I've been working on. Have a great day! -Julie Hammond
P.S. Here is a link to see more of my work!

Sophie's Stuff

I am working on illstrations for a children's book about a little bunny dealing with clutter. Would appreciate any comments.

Saintly Sleeper II

This time I used a pen staff with ink--again, returning to an older method of working was refreshing. Minnie, fortunately, didn't move very much!

Saintly Sleeper

wanted to show my art appreciation class some examples of various media, so I used our Saint Bernard as the model. She snored & posed well! I used a bamboo brush & ink. It was fun returning to an old way of working.

Owl and the Pussy Cat

Hello Everyone,
Posting what I'm working on. I love the poem "The Owl
and the Pussy Cat" and I wanted to do my own spin on it.
I took some time to work on the characters and this is what
I came up with. Hope to find more time to work on it, but
I have to work on work first. What are you working on?
Please post them cause we all would love to see what your
are working on.
Have a great rest of the week.

Favourite Art Materials

Hi Everybody. I am so happy to be part of this blog.

Above is a watercolor and colored pencil painting that I did recently to represent me as a character. I like otters and I like to paint, seemed like a good match.

Arches watercolor paper is my preference. Anywhere from 140 to 300 lb. cold press. I've try out other papers from time to time but always end up back with Arches. It seems to be the only paper that can take how rough I can be with it. I like to rub away and scratch into it, glue things on it, and have been known to take very fine sandpaper into a wash for a textural effect. Prismacolor is my favorite color pencil; they have a rich creamy pigment. And lastly, my first choice for watercolor pigments are Daniel Smith Extra Fine Watercolors, then Da Vinci Artist's Quality Watercolor, and at the moment I am fairly happy with Holbein Artists Watercolor. Anyone else really meticulous about their brushes? I can't walk into an art store without having a good look at brushes (though I am always on the look out for a premium drawing pencil). Having said that, I take very good care of my brushes and have brushes I still paint with that are 15 years old.

IF WARNING

This is my contribution for this weeks IF. They are saying "Should we stay or should we go?" I had fun doing just black and white. Although I was tempted to make the kids cheeks pink!

Checking in.

I miss everybody here. I haven't been posting because frankly, I have been bitten by the digital art bug. I have finally gotten around to learning how to use my Wacom and stylus and translating my traditional watercolor style to the pixel life.

In addition to that, I am also branching out into licensing. I have several projects in the works, but nothing to show there yet.

If you want to see what I've been up to, please visit me on my blog for daily doodles, upcycled clothing creations and works in progress peeks.

I hope to get my watercolors dusted off and soggy soon.
