This happy little fellow says his name is Harold. I don't think he looks much like a Harold, but there you have it.I had a lot of fun with this prompt. Now onto more "serious" work. Ha!
The color is a bit off. The painting is much, much more vivid, but when I saved it to jpg file it lost the brightness.

sometimes our characters tell us who they are--hi Harold! You gave me a great idea for WW--we need some "serious" challenges to help us all build our portfolios so that we send out the best of our work. Would love some feedback from everyone--any suggestions for helping us all build a better, stronger porfolio? A challenge, such as a specific assignment, something we can all come out better for. sorry, I'm rambling here, but I think you're on the right track--we've got a good group here & we could use it as a springboard for professionalism. :) Thanks!
I think we need to do a "character sheet" this is one thing I don't have in my portfolio that is supposedly "a must have".
There was a list somewhere on some blog that listed the things every children's book illustrator should have in a portfolio, of course, silly me I can't find it now...
Harold is a rather beautiful snail! His shell is quite amazing, so full of color and details. I know you said the color is a bit off, but it still looks vivid to me.
A character sheet is indeed a good idea. I've always heard that art directors look for consistency in character development, so this could a prompt that lasts more than just a week...
That it!!! I'm stealing the shell. This is going to be a snail without a home for sure!!!! I LOVE THE COLORS!! It looks like candy to me!! How great is this!!!!
After reading everyone comment I have to say that I totally agree. We do need some more challenges to help us stretch ourselves. There was time when I was only doing a job here or there and it wasn't in children's book illustration. I waned so badly to do Children's books. I took a class at SVA in New York and learn a lot. It's was only for 4 weeks, but it really sparked things in me. One of the things we were required to do was give ourselves projects. These project helped us to develop work for our portfolios. We would give ourselves an assignment like, Do a spot for Parent Magazine or a child Magazine. The spot should be about parents trying to get their children to go to sleep. The challenge was getting all that into the spot illustration. On developing a character. We would do a little writting about the character, like name, age, culture, where do they live, do they have a family, what do they really like, what don't they like. What makes them afraid, what's their super power etc. This really helped us build a character and then we would work on a few character illustrations. Make them happy, sad, mad, thoughtful, scared etc. I know I'm just going on. I hope that this helps a little. Sorry for going on and on.

I agree about portfolio! I think we could try paint some serious-works to tales, for a book etc. not just single drawings.

How about we spend a month on developing a single subject or story, so that we have a series of related paintings?
This is quite an interesting snail... a fancy Harold snail that is. I love the design and pattern that you created on the shell as well as the touch of color in the background to off-set it. Well done.
