I really admire the artwork from everyone in the group. I see the strengths that each of us has and I have learned from the rest of you. I also appreciate the support and kindness you give to me and to the group. In this business, I don't know about the rest of you, but self-judgment is enough to get me down. Your encouragement is a welcome respite. It definitely makes this blog a fun place to come to!
While I'm writing this post, I thought I might as well ask those of you who've been published: what do you think was key to getting your first paid assignment (and then the others that followed)? Was it something you did with your artwork? Was it chance? promotion? attending conferences and networking? connections? Your advice may or may not help me personally, but I do feel inspired by learning about others' success stories (and that helps me push forward until it'll happen to me).

Hey Angela, I already agree with these wonderful ladies. You have worked so very hard and we are all so very happy for you. I love the new banner. You asked a wonderful question. I really can't say it was my artwork alone. I have a wonderful agent and I had to shop for her. My sister is my manger and she was the one who did all the hard work. Putting press kits together and making me look good. She sent out about 6 press kits with tearsheets and bio information as well as a few free things like a print of my work. I had already gotten a wonderful book that comes out every year,"The Children's Writer's and Illustrations Market " We read it like it was the Bible!!!!! I googled "Art agents." I googled some of my favorite artist and looked at who represented them. I searched each and everyday. I gave myself projects to do for a fresh portfolio. I honed my work and studied other peoples work. It's wasn't 3 weeks and 5 out of the 6 agents that I sent my work to called to represent me. It was GOD!!! So I will tell you to keep doing what you doing and create a fabulous portfolio. Google artist that you love and their agents and be bold and brave and submit your best work and watch what happens!!!
