Plein Air abstract, watercolor painting, Cheniere Lake painting by Linda T Snider Ward, Louisiana artist

Cheniere Lake, Abstract Plein Air. This is an abstract plein air painting, which was a lot of fun to paint. It's watercolor on paper. After painting plein air several days with a friend of mine, I was curious to see "what if" I only painted the shapes that I saw and didn't try to create a realistic image. The result is rather interesting.

"Koi Pond II" small art, watercolor painting by Linda T Snider Ward

Koi Pond II is a small (5.5" x 7.5") watercolor on Rives BFK paper. This type of paper, a printmaking paper, doesn't allow for a lot of transitions but receives the watercolor as a stain. The image is from several pictures that I took of a friend's koi pond. When the fish hear her voice, they come up to the surface to greet her (hoping for food, of course).

Giving Thanks For Play Time

We are so privileged to have such a wonderful occupation. How much fun is it to illustrate or create stories for children (and adults) and spend our hours playing with the materials of our childhood; paint, pencils, paper and all sorts of crafty bits and pieces? Thanks Giving is not something we celebrate in Australia but regularly I thank God for the life I have, for the gift of creativity and the comfort of a studio space to explore my craft.

Think about it for a minute: image after image magically appears, creatively birthed into existence when once it was just blank paper or canvas and paint or other media.  Anything created to give Joy to others is something to be celebrated but I am thankful that I get to enjoy the process of creation as well as the result of it.

I am thankful for sketchbook journaling in between work. It is a great way to just have a play.

This week I took some time off to enjoy journaling, not fussing over perfection, application or expectations of another viewer. It is a collection of random scribbling and collected moments in time. I had a totally indulgent play filling 3 pages and loved it. Sometime we forget why we started illustrating in the first place – because it is FUN!

Favourite Art Materials

Hi Everybody. I am so happy to be part of this blog.

Above is a watercolor and colored pencil painting that I did recently to represent me as a character. I like otters and I like to paint, seemed like a good match.

Arches watercolor paper is my preference. Anywhere from 140 to 300 lb. cold press. I've try out other papers from time to time but always end up back with Arches. It seems to be the only paper that can take how rough I can be with it. I like to rub away and scratch into it, glue things on it, and have been known to take very fine sandpaper into a wash for a textural effect. Prismacolor is my favorite color pencil; they have a rich creamy pigment. And lastly, my first choice for watercolor pigments are Daniel Smith Extra Fine Watercolors, then Da Vinci Artist's Quality Watercolor, and at the moment I am fairly happy with Holbein Artists Watercolor. Anyone else really meticulous about their brushes? I can't walk into an art store without having a good look at brushes (though I am always on the look out for a premium drawing pencil). Having said that, I take very good care of my brushes and have brushes I still paint with that are 15 years old.
