Spring

I'm not super thrilled with how this turned out. What do ya'll think? What could I tweak to make it better? Honest opinions welcome...

I think you need to add more depth. Grass isn't a solid green. I t has browns and blues and reds.

Also, the colors are all the same intensity. Convert the image to black and white. There are no very dark places or very light areas. Decide on your focus point. (I think the girl in the springs is it, right?) concentrate the very darks and very lights in her area of the painting. A few shadows can help ground the other subjects, too.

What a fun idea, Michelle! The dog in the back adds a great touch to it, too.

After reading Lyon's comments, I agree with her. I was also wondering if you could crop part of the springy girl (while still revealing what she's doing) to make her even bigger, to create even more excitement? I'm not sure, but I think it would help us focus in on her even more.

And thanks for your comments about my portfolio! I appreciate the time you took to do that for me.

It's a fun and great picture! I agree with the ladies. You need some contrast in the grass and trees to creative depth in the illustration. I really would like to see it again if you choose to fix it. Over all I like the composition and the characters are a hoot!

Thanks so much for the critique ladies! I must admit, I did this last night, and was tired, and feeling pretty lazy, which is evident in the quality of this illo. Thanks for the input about the grass, and the shadows. That's an area I'm constantly struggling with. Also great tip about converting to B&W, I'll have to try that with some of my other illos too!

Michelle: This idea is great! I have trouble with extreme perspectives also, but they seem to be what's needed in a portfolio. Perhaps diminishing the shadow just beneath the springs to make it look further away and making the springs large near the viewer but smaller on the ends away from the viewer would help. I really like this piece & think it could be a great portfolio piece!

i agree with everyone else...if you could get her head bigger and her feet smaller and make her shadow smaller...she'd really look like she's flying high! and yep give teh grass a bit more (i have this same problem)
i love this piece it's very fun and happy!

I know it can be tough working with perspective but I think that this piece is still delightful. There is a great energy to it. I would say to try working on the pose some more with your "springy gal". Getting the dimensions in her limbs just right, and adding some shadows to the background would help the composition. Hope this helps. =)
