"Perhaps this was the one who sang to me so sweetly in the summer," [Thumbelina] said; "and how much pleasure it gave me, you dear, pretty bird." Such a sad part of the story, but what compassion in her heart to care for the dead bird and wonder if it was the one who sang to her.
This is my first submission here at "Watercolor Wednesdays'. I'm new to children's illustration and hope to share and learn lots through these prompts as it's a bit of a challenge for me with proportions and angles. As well, as much as I love watercolor, I do find it frustrating sometimes with respect to how much more control I have with colored pencils & pen.

It is so true of watercolor that it can be very trying at times. With some patients and constant practice, you will be able to master it as well. I always tell people,"Watercolor is not for controlled artist, It will beat you every single time. It took me years before I mastered it and sometimes I still struggle. The picture is beautiful. It has a great mood to it. I think you've done very well showing the expression and all. Can't wait to see what you'll do next. Have a creative weekend!

Laura:Very good colors & great composition--a nice sense of mood also to the piece. I'm a pencil/color pencil person also. I find that the heavier the paper, the less frustrating watercolor is. With heavy paper, you know you can change areas, pull up color, manipulate areas. You're doing great--glad to have you in the group! Linda
This is a really endearing piece. It has a wonderful quality about it and you certainly captured a beautiful moment in the story.
Linda, you've done a lovely job with this illo. No worries. That's the great thing about groups like these - this is where you can experiment and test ideas, without fear of "failure." I'm looking forward to seeing what your next illo will be!

Welcome to WW Laura! Nice illustration. Charming and simple. I like how it shows the two of them sleeping in harmony together — and T is comforting the bird waiting for her to wake up.

I really like their expressions, Thumbelina and the bird... There's a peacefulness to it that is quite endearing.
Yes, watercolor is tricky, but as Michelle said, the wonderful thing about groups like this is that it encourages us to practice and learn together! :-)

They look so snuggly there! And about controlling things, I go back and forth, but after a successful moment of letting things go a little looser with watercolor, I remember why watercolor is my favorite medium!
