3 little digital pigs

These are two sample illustrations I did for a job bid. I find that doing work when given really specific restraints makes for a less interesting illustration. I am not dissatisfied with my work I just know where my strength lies and sadly it does not seem to work as well when I am give direct instructions. I do not know if I will get the job, but these were the two samples I sent them. They wanted the three little pigs. First image was supposed to have them off in search of their fortune and it needed to have the pigs wearing shirts with different color shirts and numbers on them. There also needed to be things to count like a tree with eight apples. The second image had to have a wolf wanting to come into the house made of straw that one of the pigs built. There needed to be specific shapes in this one.
All I have to say is its hard to create images from scratch when there are so many images of this story that I already have emblazoned in my brain.

Oh boy don't I know the feeling. All you can do is have fun doing the project and hope and trust that it will fly. I am going through this right now with a couple of new stories that I am working on! Everyone has an opinion and wants theirs heard. As far as the three little pig go, if you are able to, do a search on google images of the three little pigs and see what comes up. You will of course get a alot of stuff, but you will get some inspiration as well. A different view if you will. At least it will start you to thinking a little outside the box. Maybe instead of three little country pigs, like we are some what use to, try three pigs with really different personalities. Maybe one is really artsy and dresses like an artist or maybe one business like and the other like Martha Stewart with an apron or something and really work the characters. You don't have to take my advice, but I just wanted to give you some ideas to mow over if you need them. Most of all own it and have fun doing so! It will come out in your over all illustration and that's what you want to shine through. My Best,V

I agree with Vanessa--she gave some great advice. The Three Little Pigs story has been done so many times (but always so popular), give it your own personality--what are your likes & hobbies; where do you live--make them your pigs with your own special flair & have fun...the color's great by the way.
How does someone get a "job bid"? I really would like to know how to do this...thanks.

First and foremost: I love that bird's nest on the roof.

I, too, agree with Vanessa. I need to learn how to do more research instead of ALWAYS depending on pure imagination to draw my illustrations.

I like your three little pigs and I hope you get the job! (BTW, are they digital? It looks like watercolor.) It's really hard to work on spec. I agree with everyone about bringing something new into an old idea, but you're right about it taking some of the creativity out of the process, especially with such iconic images on a deadline. Hope you get it and good luck!
